Horehound Tincture (Marrubium vulgare)

For centuries, folk medicine has used horehound in the treatment of respiratory ailments. The best known herbal remedy for coughs. Some of the conditions that horehound was used for in folk medicine included whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis, chest colds, chest congestion and tuberculosis. Horehound was believed to help to calm coughs and to thin the phlegm so that the patient could expel the mucus. Not only does horehound have expectorant properties, but it also has properties of being a sedative and antispasmodic. These added properties therefore ease the coughing and help to calm it. The anti-inflammatory properties of horehound sooth the airways of the lungs and promote easier expulsion of mucus.

The oils, flavonoids, tannins and marrubium contained in horehound are believed to aid in dealing with both respiratory symptoms and digestive discomfort.

Horehound is used to make cough medicines for people whose upper respiratory symptoms are caused by acid reflux. The marubiinic acid in the herb both stimulates the release of phlegm and stimulates the release of gastric acids so that digestion is complete more quickly and nighttime gastric reflux is minimized. This compound is also mildly analgesic, relieving pain caused by cough or indigestion.

Horehound isn't good unless it tastes bad (or at least bitter). The bitter taste activates a reflex action that helps normalize breathing and digestion, and the beneficial effects of the herb are not realized if it is combined with too much sugar or other sweetener.

It also stimulates the digestive tract by triggering the flow of gastric juices, increasing the appetite and promoting the production of bile. Horehound has many uses as a digestive aid. It can relieve indigestion, bloating and gas, improve digestion, and aid in the absorption of nutrients from food.

Horehound herbal extract can also alleviate cramps experienced during menstrual cycles. Horehound may be used to promote and regulate the menstrual flow. As well as, its use to assist in the expulsion of the after-birth.

Externally, Horehound herbal tincture can be used in a wash or salve speed the healing of wounds, minor abrasions and skin inflammations.
